Proposed Property Maintenance Code

The Town of Culpeper is considering adoption of a portion of the Virginia Maintenance Code. This matter was considered previously in 2015/2016 and ultimately not deemed to appropriate at that time. It is being reconsidered at this time as Council members have received complaints from rental tenants as to the conditions of the structures they inhabit and the lack of available tools at their disposal to ensure a standard of living with their homes.

In revisiting the feedback from 2015/2016, much of the opposition was based around language in the Code that could be subjectively enforced. As localities have the ability to adopt all or a portion of the code, the subjective components of the code, which included aspects such as peeling paint, have been proposed to be excluded from what is adopted by the Town. Town staff will be leading an informational meeting on Wednesday February 7th at 5pm at the Economic Development Center, located at 803 S. Main St. to present what is being considered as well as receive feedback on the proposal. It is contemplated that staff will provide a brief overview presentation at 5pm and again at 6pm for those interested in learning more and receive feedback to be shared with Town Council following each of those presentations.

You may find information below that has been shared with the Town Council’s Committees in recent months. If you have any questions or would like to submit comments in writing, please contact Andrew Hopewell at ahopewell@culpeperva.gov.
