CERTIFICATE TO FISH
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2023 - TOWN OF CULPEPER NO LONGER REQUIRES A FISHING CERTIFICATE AND FEE FOR FISHING ON LAKE CULPEPER OR MOUNTAIN RUN LAKE.  ALL OTHER INFORMATION BELOW REMAINS IN FORCE, INCLUDING OBTAINING A STATE ISSUED FISHING LICENSE, WHERE APPLICABLE.

**Most individuals are required to obtain a state-issued fishing license from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. For information please contact them at 1-866-721-6911.**

Lake Culpeper:


Lake Culpeper is a water supply reservoir for the Town of Culpeper. It covers 255 acres with a combination of forested and open, sloped banks along its shores. Some residential development is occurring. If you like crappie and channel catfish Lake Culpeper is the place to go. This reservoir probably has more channel catfish per acre than any other lake in Northern Virginia. Other species include largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and pumpkinseed sunfish. It is also a decent lake for yellow perch.

Mountain Run Lake:

Mountain Run is another water supply reservoir near Culpeper. It’s a 75-acre lake with wooded shores and a county park. Largemouth bass provides good fishing, and there are also crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and an excellent sunfish population. The channel catfish and brown bullhead populations are among the best found in a small impoundment in Northern Virginia.


HOURS FOR FISHING; SIZE LIMITS ON FISH:

Fishing is allowed one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset. Size limits are posted at the lake.

SALE OF CATCH IS PROHIBITED.

UNLAWFUL METHODS OF TAKING FISH

  • It shall be unlawful to take or attempt to take fish from the Town lakes by means other than pole with hook and line or rod and reel intended to be handheld.
  • Unlawful methods of taking fish from the Town lakes shall include, but are not limited to, fish traps, fish pots, trot lines or haul seines.
  • Violation of this section shall constitute a Class 2 misdemeanor.
